What is ICANN, and what does it have to do with domain disputes?

ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, is the nonprofit that coordinates the global domain name system and adopted the UDRP on 26 August 1999. Every registrant of a generic top-level domain agrees to the policy when they register, which is what lets a UDRP panel order a transfer without either side going to court.
