The EU pays 75% of your trademark and design fees
The EUIPO SME Fund reimburses 75% of official application fees for EU-based small and medium businesses, at both EU and national level. It takes an EU trademark from €1,530 to about €895.
What the SME Fund is
The Ideas Powered for business SME Fund is a European Commission grant scheme run by EUIPO. It reimburses 75% of the official fees for trademark and design applications filed by small and medium businesses established in the EU.
It covers application fees, additional class fees, examination, registration, publication and deferment of publication. It applies at EU level and at national level, so a Bulgarian or Spanish national filing qualifies as well as an EUIPO one.
The rule that catches people out
The voucher has to be granted before you file the trademark or design application. Not afterwards. If you file first and apply for the voucher second, the money is gone and there is no appeal.
This is the single reason to have someone handle it who does it regularly. The sequencing is the whole thing, and it is not obvious from the application form.
What it does to the price
An EU trademark in one class costs €1,530 with us, of which €850 is the EUIPO fee. The fund returns 75% of that fee, which is €638. Your real cost is about €895.
The reimbursement is paid after you have filed and paid, so you need the cash up front either way.
